It's also THAT Time of Year Again.

Time for a little doe, doe, buck!

Signs of the season:

How to tell when the guys are home:

First deer of the season was a doe for Jason.  David went right to practicing his surgical skills.

With a little help from Dad of course.

Next up was a doe for Joe.

And then there's Joe...

It's really fun to wash up in some-teen degree weather!

The problem with letting your deer hang overnight when it is some-teen degree weather...it freezes!

The good thing about letting your deer hang overnight when it is some-teen degree weather and it freezes--you find out there are many, many great uses for deer besides just eating them...
A new (3-D) deer-skin rug for the living room!

Dance Party!

A stretcher!  (Look at those Eagle Scouts handle that thing!  What professionals!)

 Flag pole.

When transporting a deer one should take extra care to do it in such a way as to not call undue attention or distract or offend the sensitivities of other drivers...

Check this out!  We got a new hood (ok, roof) ornament for the truck!!!!!

The flyyyyying deer of doooooooooom!

 OK, we tried!

And then Jason got a buck!

(notice the crazy "buck fever" look in his eyes, now you know where the sons get it from)

And what do you do when you are done hunting?

Don't be sad, the season isn't over yet!  Muzzle loader season is right around the corner and maybe then the boys will finally get a buck to bring home.

Hunting Season Wrap-Up

Well, there were two more deer taken this year.
Joe got himself a nice little buck.  I was at Katie's basketball practice that evening.  I couldn't get home in time to take a picture before they took the deer to the processor so I made one.  I think it's a pretty true likeness, don't you?!

Then Jason was finally able to get him a little buck.
Yay!  Now we can have a life again!
...
What?
...
What's that you say?
....
 There's still muzzle-loader season???
...
And there's more bow season?
...
??

!!!!!!

Oh man!

Oh well....

'Tis the Season

Jason dropped his first doe of the season.  He has been itchin' to get a deer with his bow.  After watching does wander around him the last couple of times he has been out, he finally just shot one today.  There'll be big bucks later in the year.  We need bratwurst now!

Now, if you are the squeemish type, you need to stop reading here...

But this is just too cool not to share!
Jason was pretty sure he got a heart shot because the deer dropped.
It wasn't until they cleaned it and pulled the heart out that they were positive...
There was a perfect imprint of the arrowhead on the heart!
And that is how it is done, ladies and gentlemen!
(And, yes, that is MY man!)

No Autographs, Please!

Joe's picture from the newspaper...

Oh deer!

So here's the report and pictures of this year's deer season...thus far...

Rex got a nice button buck from 300 yards.
He and Joe tracked it from the tree house and caught it in a clearing in the treeline.

 Staking my claim.

Jason was really excited about this one because it ran at him when he called it.
I guess he's learning how to sweet talk 'em!

This is the best story of this season:
We came home from early morning seminary to find Jason standing on the back deck,
still in pajamas and slippers,
waving at us.
Yep, we left him unsupervised just long enough for him to wander out
and find something worth shooting.
No need to get dressed for such occasions, we don't stand on principle around here!

A chicken for every pot...a deer for every Honda?
The little transportation truck was unavailable this day
so what does every good redneck do?
Stuff a deer in yer trunk!
Don't be jealous 'cause we're cool like that!

It Was....

...a beautiful Fall morning... clear and crisp.
The sun was just beginning to burst into the sky when I heard a single gunshot.

Eventually I heard the four-wheeler fire up out in the shop and off it went down the driveway.

Then I heard it come home.

Let me introduce you to Joe's 10 point buck...

It was a 300 yard shot.  Joe said he put the scope on the buck, took the shot and then didn't see the buck.  Joe was horrified that he had missed the shot.  There was no sign of the buck anywhere.
Jason, the spotter, lost track of the buck right after the shot.
They watched the woods for a while to see if there was any movement.
Nothing.

Joe and Jason walked across the pasture, heading for the treeline where they had last seen the buck.  There lay the big boy, a dead drop, he hadn't taken a single step.  A clean neck shot put him down right where he had stood.

Yep, the kid has his mama's sniping skills!

And he also has a jack-o-lantern on his head.

They took the buck down to Walt's to have it measured.

And Joe got to pose to have his picture taken for the local paper.

He didn't really appreciate having an audience.

Then the three amigos boarded the trusty to'yota and headed off to the processors.

Just When You Thought You'd Heard It All

The BEST Hunting Story of the Season
After so many adventures our guys had with the 2011 deer season we thought we'd seen it all. Now the equipment is stored away, waiting for next year, the guns are cleaned and locked up, the freezer overflowing with meat. All said and all done. Time to move on to other things.
Then a friend tells us a little story that just kicks all our tall tales right out the window!

It was a beautiful, crisp Autumn morning. Perfect for deer hunting.
The little boy got up, had his breakfast and then quickly dressed for his first hunting trip with Dad. Hopping into his favorite shorts and pulling on his lucky bright green cowboy boots (what else would you wear on a hunting trip?!), he was ready to go!
Dad was excited to have a little time to spend with his son. Knowing it was hard for the young boy to sit still and his movement would probably scare off any wildlife, Dad figured they wouldn't have much chance of shooting anything but it was more about just getting to spend time together than anything else.
Father and son headed off into the field and found a nice place to sit.
After just a little wait a beautiful buck walked across the field, right in front of the boys. Dad made sure his son was safely behind him then leveled his gun, looked through the sights and squeezed the trigger. The shot echoed across the pasture and the deer went down.
The excited pair ran to the fallen deer. The deer lay very still and was obviously dead. What a shot! What a successful first hunting trip! After surveying their handiwork for a few minutes, proud Dad positions the deer and then stands his son behind it to pose for a nice picture--documentation for future generations to marvel at.

Just like any other hunting trip that occurs during the annual deer seasons throughout the state, right?

Well, as the grinning little boy stands by the deer and Dad fiddles with his camera, a black dog wanders out of the tree line and comes to join the party. The two have never seen this dog ever before in all the times they have been out in this field. Dad gives a little smile thinking it funny that the dog just happened to show up on this particular day when they have downed such a mighty beast. Thinking it will make the picture even better to have the black dog in it, Dad lets his son pat the dog and make friends.
As everything is set for the picture, and just as Dad begins to press the button on his camera, the great deer lifts his head and looks directly at the camera, as if he, too, is posing for the picture. Dad snaps the picture, the deer hops up on all four, the dog barks, the son yells, and the deer bolts away across the pasture leaving Dad and son and dog with nothing to do but watch the fluffy white tail of their trophy get smaller and smaller until it disappears over the far horizon.

Well, at least they have a picture...

And so the Week comes to a Close

Another hunting season is ending. A buck for every boy. Our freezers are fat and happy with the great bounty of this year. It has been a good season.
