And then the guys decided I should go Hunting with Them

And Joe drew the short straw and got stuck with babysitting me...

We got up into the little hunting area they have set up on top of the shop and it was apparent David had hunted up here at a previous time:

I learned much about myself from this experience.
I spent the evening concentrating very hard to keep my cool and control desire to jump up and yell "Run, Bambi!!!!!!!!!" should we see a deer.  I had been invited along on this expedition and I wanted to be a good guest.
When evening came and the sun dropped it was time for the deer to come out of their hiding spots in the woods.  I doubled my efforts to behave myself and not ruin the hunt for the guys.
We finally saw a deer across the field I found myself excitedly telling Joe "Shoot it!  Shoot it shoot it shoot it!!!!!!!!!"
Wow.
So that's what I really am, huh?!
Good thing they didn't let me carry a gun.

It's also THAT Time of Year Again.

Time for a little doe, doe, buck!

Signs of the season:

How to tell when the guys are home:

First deer of the season was a doe for Jason.  David went right to practicing his surgical skills.

With a little help from Dad of course.

Next up was a doe for Joe.

And then there's Joe...

It's really fun to wash up in some-teen degree weather!

The problem with letting your deer hang overnight when it is some-teen degree weather...it freezes!

The good thing about letting your deer hang overnight when it is some-teen degree weather and it freezes--you find out there are many, many great uses for deer besides just eating them...
A new (3-D) deer-skin rug for the living room!

Dance Party!

A stretcher!  (Look at those Eagle Scouts handle that thing!  What professionals!)

 Flag pole.

When transporting a deer one should take extra care to do it in such a way as to not call undue attention or distract or offend the sensitivities of other drivers...

Check this out!  We got a new hood (ok, roof) ornament for the truck!!!!!

The flyyyyying deer of doooooooooom!

 OK, we tried!

And then Jason got a buck!

(notice the crazy "buck fever" look in his eyes, now you know where the sons get it from)

And what do you do when you are done hunting?

Don't be sad, the season isn't over yet!  Muzzle loader season is right around the corner and maybe then the boys will finally get a buck to bring home.

The Mighty Huntress

Katie went out for youth season this weekend.
Saturday morning a new record was set here for the low temperature.  She came home that morning a frozen little popcicle and hadn't seen a single deer.
That evening she was out again, this time in the treehouse and they decided to bring mom along for the fun.  It was a nice evening but again, not a single deer anywhere to be seen.
We've had deer sightings all over our place for weeks but the day of youth season they all went into hiding.  They must all instinctively know what a mighty huntress our Katie is and they all ran away in fear.
Just for the record--she is one heck of a shot.  She usually shoots with her .22 but for hunting deer she was going to need something bigger.  It was decided she would borrow David's hunting rifle which she had never shot before so her dad took her out for some target practice to get her ready for hunting.
After a while practicing loading and unloading and sighting with the scope and such things it was time to take her first shot.  Katie sat in the front yard and lined up on the target out by the barn.  First shot.....bullseye.
She was a little put-out about her second shot, though--it was just a little less than an inch below the bullseye.
We decided she was ready to go hunting.

She's got a little bit of her brothers in her, can you tell?!!!

We'll see if she gives her brothers a run for it during rifle season this year.

The 2013 Hunt

'Tis that time of year again.  Ah, firearms deer season.  That time of year when all the deer take up guns and chase the hunters from the woods.....
Yeah.
All of the boys in this house have been waiting with barely-contained excitement for that special Saturday to finally get here.  Picture something like a pack of hyped-up racehorses in their respective gates, chomping at the bit, restlessly awaiting that signal shot.  Only with bigger guns.
Saturday morning finally arrived and it looked promising.  Now, I mean it literally looked promising.  I glanced out of our back window and a faint rainbow had dropped to the ground right where our guys were out hunting.
See?
Sign of good things to come, right?
Nope!
It has been a HORRIBLE hunting season this year.
The boys have seen a few good bucks but never in a place that they can get a good shot at them.
I think they are all just rattled and have lost their confidence because I was the one to land the first buck this year. (I just used my car to do it, no need to get up out of my seat or get my hands dirty using a nasty gun.)
On opening day they saw a few does but let them pass by because they were sure they were going to be getting the big bucks.
A couple of days into the season, having no luck and seeing next to no deer,  they decided they'd shoot does if they saw them.  Better does than nothing.
But then there were no does either.
So they lay awake at night, scheming and plotting, strategizing and crying....
Finally they decided to form a hunting posse and David, Jason, Seth and our friend Nathan headed out to the great woods.

I waited back at the homestead.
In the nice, warm, cushioned, carpeted, soft-seated, refrigerator and snack pantry accessible, satellite television enabled homestead....  and thought about the posse out in the freezing cold wind watching the empty pastures.
Finally a text came in!
It was Seth.
The message brought news of a deer finally being brought down.
David had made the shot and Seth was in the process of helping David drag the deer in.
David had set up his hunting position on top of an old metal shed behind an old house that sits on Poppy and Baaboo's property.  Being up on that building gives you a great view out across many pastures but sometimes such a wide open view isn't the best thing because you can see deer running around out of your range and you have to just sit there and feel frustrated if you cannot get them to come in closer to you.
Seth's message was laced with excitement and pride as he bragged on his little brother.  "At least 300 yards and a dead drop."  And he had taken time to pose his little brother with his deer for a photo before the daylight was gone.
Eventually I got the call that the deer had been brought in and I could come down and see it.  Upon arrival I was given all of the details of the adventure.
David had been on top of his little building.  He saw a doe and decided to take the shot.  After Seth got to David the boys worked together.  Using their cell phones, David stood atop his shed directing Seth down in the field guiding him to where the deer went down.  Seth found the deer with no problem, she dropped right on the spot David had shot her.  The boys dragged the deer in and Jason and Nathan met up with them. Going back over the area they had covered, Jason realized that the shot was more like 400 yards if not a little more. And it split the heart.
Looks like we have another sniper in our family!
The funny thing is, David has this ongoing little joke of his...
When the guys are getting ready to go out and they are readying their guns and ammo, Jason asks David if he has enough ammo and David always replies "I only need one" and holds up just one bullet and puts it in the ammo-holder-thingy.
So when all was said and done this evening and we were all back inside the nice, warm, cushioned, carpeted, soft-seated, refrigerator and snack pantry accessible, satellite television enabled homestead David came up to me, looked me in the eye, pulled the spent casing from his pocket and held it up as he said, "See, I told you, just one."

'Tis the Season

Jason dropped his first doe of the season.  He has been itchin' to get a deer with his bow.  After watching does wander around him the last couple of times he has been out, he finally just shot one today.  There'll be big bucks later in the year.  We need bratwurst now!

Now, if you are the squeemish type, you need to stop reading here...

But this is just too cool not to share!
Jason was pretty sure he got a heart shot because the deer dropped.
It wasn't until they cleaned it and pulled the heart out that they were positive...
There was a perfect imprint of the arrowhead on the heart!
And that is how it is done, ladies and gentlemen!
(And, yes, that is MY man!)

No Autographs, Please!

Joe's picture from the newspaper...

Oh deer!

So here's the report and pictures of this year's deer season...thus far...

Rex got a nice button buck from 300 yards.
He and Joe tracked it from the tree house and caught it in a clearing in the treeline.

 Staking my claim.

Jason was really excited about this one because it ran at him when he called it.
I guess he's learning how to sweet talk 'em!

This is the best story of this season:
We came home from early morning seminary to find Jason standing on the back deck,
still in pajamas and slippers,
waving at us.
Yep, we left him unsupervised just long enough for him to wander out
and find something worth shooting.
No need to get dressed for such occasions, we don't stand on principle around here!

A chicken for every pot...a deer for every Honda?
The little transportation truck was unavailable this day
so what does every good redneck do?
Stuff a deer in yer trunk!
Don't be jealous 'cause we're cool like that!
